Manchester United’s decision to extend Harry Maguire’s contract until 2026 has sparked debates among fans and analysts. Manager Ruben Amorim has defended the decision, emphasising the defender’s leadership qualities during a tough season. However, the question remains: does Maguire’s current form justify this commitment?
Defensive Contributions in the 2024/2025 Season
Maguire has featured in 12 matches across competitions this season, including eight appearances in the Premier League. Despite limited game time, he has delivered solid contributions in certain defensive metrics.
For example, Maguire averages 2.3 interceptions per 90 minutes and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes, showcasing that he still has the ability to read the game and eliminate danger. Not only that, but his interceptions rate of 2.5 per 90 in the Premier League is the BEST of anyone who has played at least 500 minutes this season.
In aerial duels, Maguire has a rate of 4.5 attempted and 3.3 won this season across the Premier League and Europa League, making him a vital presence in defending set-pieces and long balls, even if United have struggled with both this season. However, his tackles won (1.2 attempted, 0.9 won) and recovery numbers (3.5 recoveries per 90) lag behind some of the top flight's elite centre-backs.
These statistics suggest that while he is pretty reliable in specific scenarios, he does struggle with the agility of some opponents and needing quick decision-making at crucial times.
Errors and Weaknesses
One area of concern is Maguire’s tendency to lose possession under pressure. He averages 8.8 times possession is lost per 90 minutes, often in situations that allow opponents to exploit United's defensive frailty this season considering his role in the heart of the defence.
Additionally, his pass accuracy of 87%, while commendable, also falls short when compared to modern ball-playing defenders.
Leadership and Experience
Amorim’s praise for Maguire’s leadership reflects his value in the dressing room.
At 32, Maguire remains one of United’s most experienced players, with over 150 appearances for the club. Amorim described him as a “leader” crucial for guiding younger players during challenging periods.
Is the Contract Extension Justified?
The contract extension suggests United value Maguire’s intangible qualities, such as leadership and resilience, over flawless on-pitch performances...at least right now. But to be fair to the England International, it isn't exactly like there are others playing for United right now who have been on top of their game.
Still, his defensive stats place him behind the Premier League’s top centre-backs, raising doubts about his ability to justify a prominent role for United in the long term. But, the club have a centre-back who has experience at the top level and such longevity for the Red Devils, so it does make sense in the short term.
